Palermo:(International Desk) According to ug news Media Europe,This week for the year 2022-2023, Kashmir Yoga Course was inaugurated in the “Palermo Yoga” School, in via Guglielmo Borremans, 9, in Palermo in Sicily. (www.palermoyoga.it).
We went to experience the practice of Yoga and it was a pleasant surprise.
There is an atmosphere of sacredness in the air, odours of lavender and spread ylang ylang essential oil. Some say the entrance feels like a chapel … !! I would instead say that it looks like a Temple, not in the religious sense of the term, but in the natural meaning, which brings out the sacred element contained in the lives of each one of us.
Introducing and greeting the participants is Maria Cicero, teacher and President of the Association.
“Our Yoga project was born in 2005 in the wake of the teachings of Maestro Salvatore Sanfilippo, who proposes Yoga according to the rigorous setting of a tradition.
Yoga in Indian culture represents a Darshana, (devanāgarī दर्शन, from the Sanskrit root drś, meaning “to see”), it can be translated as “point of view”, is one of the six Schools of knowledge, Samkhya, Nyaia, Vaisesika, Yoga, Mimansa and Vedanta.
These schools meet across all branches of knowledge and have as their purpose of the investigation of reality. In Indian culture there is no contrast between the various sectors of knowledge, “they are points of view” of a cognitive investigation and all lead to the Ultimate Reality.
Yoga is therefore found within an apparatus of knowledge characterized by rigor and seriousness.
Yoga is not gymnastics, it is a discipline comparable to science.
We peek into the Yoga room, we are intrigued, we want to see the arrangement, we enter barefooted, in silence and only to practice. On the walls there are the giant posters of three Yoginis of Tamil Nadu; 10th century in the Siddhasana position. A large image of Shiva captures our attention. He is in the form of Ekamukhalingam, which symbolizes pure and absolute consciousness, the most dematerialized form of Reality. On the north wall behind the teacher’s station, there is a very colorful and psychedelic oil on canvas, entitled “Creation and Dissolution”. It symbolically synthesizes the cosmic cycle of creation and dissolution of the Universe and simultaneously reflects the functioning of consciousness.
Students are sitting on the mats waiting for the lesson to begin, some would like to come in to experience and observe, but the teacher says that it is not possible to stay in the room without practicing Yoga. Yoga is not to look at as a performance of dance or artistic gymnastics. Yoga is an inner experience that must be lived directly, therefore, it invites those who will not practice to leave the room.
In the interval between one lesson and another, we observe the relaxed faces of those who come out of the Yoga room. We notice a real lifting effect for they appear satisfied and relaxed, some faces recall the enlightened expression of the statues of Jayavarman, emperor- deity of the Khmer empire in Cambodia.
Now they can savor an herbal tea and almond and chocolate sweets, we observe lively impressions of some who are faithful students and have been practicing for several years. Others are with their first experience and are thinking of starting the winter yoga course. They are all very satisfied.
What is the secret and what has produced so much relaxation in people’s faces ? We ask Maria Cicero.
“Tension cannot be removed through an act of will, relaxation cannot be provoked voluntarily, one can only become aware of these restrictions and obstacles in the body. Use of precautions.
When people enter a yoga room, in the first instance they are invited to abandon the normal functioning that characterizes the carrying out of a routine day, usually characterized by the finalization of each activity.
Inside a Yoga room one should get into the habit of carrying out some activities in a non-finalized way, completely devoid of activities. Postures are assumed, we breathe, we become aware of thoughts, events in the body and mind, all this must be lived in a ritual and sacred way, no finalization, only celebration and listening.
This modality, gradually consolidating with time, shifts the awareness from the physical body to the energy body and gives, as a reflection, expressions in the face that reflect our most natural expression, which is precisely a state of physical relaxation .
The Palermo Yoga Association is available for face-to-face courses and online courses. It offers summer internships in the most beautiful places in Sicily.
