According to Ug News Media Europe,French President Emmanuel Macron’s refusal to apologize to Algeria for 132 years of colonialism will have a negative impact on bilateral relations and will complicate the reconciliation process between the two countries.”Ivan Bocharov, an expert of the Russian International Relations Council (RIAC), told “Ug News Media Europe” about this.He emphasized that for Algerians, the memory of the colonial past is not an empty matter.
However, according to the expert, it is not credible that this will have serious political or even economic consequences.
“In previous years, harsher statements were made and this had even greater negative consequences, even the recall of the Algerian ambassador from Paris. Now these things are not happening,” I. Bocharov said.The expert recalled that Emmanuel Macron’s visit to Algeria last year was an important event and said that it should contribute to the normalization of bilateral relations, at least partially. In 2023, Algerian President Abdulmajid Tebbou is expected to visit France.
“If the visit takes place, we should not expect a leap in the perception of the countries regarding the history of relations between France and Algeria. However, the parties understand the importance of continuing the dialogue,” the RIAC expert said.
