Manchester: Arif Chaudhry
The Reverend Canon Father Falak Sher, pastor of the Church of the Ascension Salford, has said that healthy marriage is the guarantee of a healthy nation. He demanded that Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz ban child marriages to ensure the safety of children and create collective awareness among children and parents about child marriages. He expressed these views while addressing a press conference organized by the Overseas Pakistani Christian Community at Salford Church. On this occasion, he also read out a message from Bishop David Walker, Lord Bishop of Manchester. The ceremony was addressed by Reverend Fayyaz Adnan, Asif Mal, Aftab Alexander, Barrister Maqbool Malik, Reverend Nathan Bhatti, Mehboob Elahi Butt and others.
Father Falak Sher strongly condemned the alleged kidnapping of 12 years and 9 months old girl Maria Shahbaz in Nawab Town area of Lahore, her religious conversion and the court’s decision to legalize the marriage and register the case. He said that this conference is in the name of these young girls who are silently enduring oppression in the name of power and religion. He said that girls who become mothers at a young age are subject to mental stress, which gives rise to an unhealthy society. If mothers are given good health and education, they can build a great nation. He said that the legal age of marriage in Pakistan is 18 years, but thousands of children are still being married at an early age. He announced that an appeal will be filed against the court decision in the Maria Shahbaz case and Barrister Maqbool Malik will follow up on behalf of the Overseas Pakistani community in this case. The speakers condemned child marriages in Pakistan, called for the protection of children’s rights and the implementation of the law, and said that they would raise the issue before the British Parliament and international human rights organizations.
