Manchester: Shahbaz Sarwar, a councillor elected from the Longsight ward of Manchester City Council, has formally left the Workers Party and joined the Labour Party. The announcement was made during a special ceremony attended by MP Afzal Khan, former councillor Rab Nawaz Akbar, Tahir Siddiq Chaudhry, Ustad Safdar, Hafiz Hamood ur Rehman, along with several community leaders and activists.
Shahbaz Sarwar was elected in the 2024 local elections from the Longsight ward, where he defeated the then Labour deputy leader Lutf ur Rehman. His move to join the Labour Party is being viewed as a significant development in local political circles.
Speaking at the event, Shahbaz Sarwar said he made the decision after consulting with his colleagues and community leaders. According to him, the step has been taken to ensure better representation of the area, improved development work, and more effective resolution of public issues.
He said that since being elected, he has always prioritised serving the people of Longsight, addressing their concerns, and ensuring effective representation, and he will continue to work with the same commitment and dedication in the future.
Commenting on the issue of Palestine, Shahbaz Sarwar said he has consistently raised his voice in support of Gaza and the Palestinian people. He noted that at the beginning of the Gaza war, many people were disappointed with the Labour Party’s stance; however, the party leadership later acknowledged certain mistakes and made changes to its policy.
He further said that after careful consideration of all aspects, he decided to join the Labour Party, as he believes this platform will enable him to serve the people of Longsight and Manchester more effectively.
Shahbaz Sarwar reaffirmed that his principles, ideology, and commitment to the public remain unchanged, and that his first priority will always be serving the people of Longsight and Manchester.
