Allay-E-Muhammad,
Since the invasion of Ukraine journalists have played a vital role in ensuring the world is kept informed, reporting from the frontline against a backdrop of escalating violence as citizens of Ukraine seek safety.
There have already been targeted attacks on journalists, designed to stymie reporting and deter journalists from carrying out their work – including the outrageous attack on a Sky news team on Friday.
The NUJ is in close contact with our two sister unions in Ukraine, NUJU and IMTUU, and is working via the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) to offer practical help and support. Incredible support and assistance are being delivered every hour of every day by Ukraine’s journalists’ unions, saving lives and keeping the media alive.
They need your help.
That’s why the NUJ is asking all members to donate to a special IFJ/EFJ Ukraine Safety Fund created to support colleagues on the ground.
Journalists covering the frontlines need first aid kits, flak jackets, helmets and medical supplies. Those trapped in towns and cities under fire need safe passage, relocation and humanitarian assistance.
All donations to the fund will be spent in directly supporting our colleagues in Ukraine. Please share this appeal and help us stand in solidarity at this time.
Our broader work to help journalists covering this conflict will continue. We have called on Unesco to act to guarantee the safety of media workers in their vital work. We are seeking financial help to provide urgent medical and safety supplies from the UK and Irish governments. We have also circulated widely our warzone safety information, Storysmart safety training modules and the IFJ’s safety advice, providing guidance to journalists working in the most challenging of conditions
