According to Ug News Media Europe,219 years ago – in January 1804, during the attack of Russian troops on Ganja, Javad Khan, his son Huseyngulu Khan and thousands of residents of Ganja fought with the enemy until their last breath and rose to the peak of martyrdom on the Ganja fortress. In all historical sources, the date of the invasion of Ganja and the martyrdom of Javad Khan are indicated as January 3 according to the Julian Calendar, and most of the modern sources mechanically indicate that date without correction. However, the main issue is that in the old Russian historical sources, January 3 is indicated by the Julian calendar used at that time, which coincides with January 15 according to the Gregorian calendar, which we have been using since 1918.Regional correspondent of Ug News Media Europe, Javad Khan, talked with Muzadil Hasanov, vice president of the History and Culture Foundation, and learned his position.
Muzadil Hasanov sent a request to the Institute of History of ANAS in 2022 regarding the mentioned issue and said that they received a positive answer: “We have additional evidence to confirm the written history. As it is known from historical sources, the attack of the Russians on the fortress took place early in the morning of Ramadan. According to the Hijri date, Shawwal 1, that is, the day of Ramadan falls on January 2 according to the Julian calendar or January 14 according to the modern calendar. The occupation of the fortress took place on the morning of the holiday, that is, on January 15.”From January 18, 1918, Russia switched from the Julian calendar to the European (Gregory) calendar. On May 1 of the same year, the Transcaucasian Democratic Federal Republic, which includes Azerbaijan, switched to the Gregorian calendar. According to the Julian calendar, January 3, 1804 coincides with January 15, 1804 due to the day difference with the current Gregorian calendar.Khan of Ganja is the result of Javad Khan Ziyadoglu Qajar. His father, Shahverdi Khan, was the Khan of Ganja, and his mother, Sharaf Jahan Beyim, was the daughter of a well-established noble family. Three sons of Javad Khan, Ugurlu Khan, Aligulu Khan and Huseyngulu Khan, and four daughters Tuti Bika, Pusta Beyim, Khatun Beyim and Balaja Beyim were born. Javad Khan died heroically as a result of Russian occupation of Ganja in 1804. In the battles for the fortress walls, his son Huseyngulu Khan was also martyred in a way worthy of his father’s name. After that, Ganja was under the protection of Russia and the khanate was abolished.
The people of Ganja have been celebrating the memorial day of Ganja Khan Javad Khan on January 15 in front of his mausoleum for several years now.”The mistake that has been going on for a long time has finally been put to an end for two years, and by the decision of the Ganja city administration, the official memorial ceremony of Javad Khan will be held in front of the tomb of our martyr Khan on January 15, 2023, just like last year,” said M. Hasanov noted.
