– The Secretary General of the Pakistani Journalists’ Union of UK, Ch Altaf Shahid, strongly condemns the recent use of force by police against journalists who were peacefully protesting against the controversial PEEKA law in Islamabad.

“It is deeply alarming and unacceptable that journalists exercising their democratic right to peaceful protest have been met with violence,” said Ch Altaf Shahid. “Freedom of the press is a cornerstone of any democratic society, and we stand in solidarity with our fellow journalists in Pakistan.”

The protest in Islamabad was organized to demand the repeal or revision of the PEEKA law, which many believe restricts freedom of expression and undermines fundamental human rights. Journalists, who had gathered lawfully, were subjected to forceful tactics that led to several injuries.

Ch Altaf Shahid calls on the Pakistani government to uphold constitutional protections for free speech and ensure the safety of journalists. “We urge the authorities to investigate this incident and take immediate steps to prevent any further escalation. Peaceful assembly and open dialogue should be protected, not suppressed,” he added.
