Iran:(International Desk) According to Ug News Media Europe,Mehdi Hashemi Rafsanjani, the 53-year-old son of the former President of Iran, Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, was released after 7 years in prison, paying a court fine and being flogged.”Ug News Media Europe” reports with reference to “Tasnim” that the unserved part of his sentence was replaced by conditional sentence.
It should be noted that Mehdi Hashimi Rafsanjani was sentenced to 15 years in prison in 2015.
He and his sister Faiza Hashemi Rafsanjani were accused of creating unrest in the country, organizing large-scale protests against the results of the presidential elections in June 2009, and spying for the benefit of Great Britain. The name of MHRafsanjani, the son of the former head of state, was also involved in the signing of illegal contracts with the Norwegian oil company “Statoil” and $30 million in corruption. This case is also called “Statoil corruption case”.
According to the official accusation of Norwegian law enforcement agencies, “Statoil” paid 15.2 million dollars to important political figures in Iran, as well as to MHRafsanjani, who headed the international relations department at the Iranian Oil Company at that time, to ensure the signing of oil contracts.
The corruption scandal was exposed on September 3, 2003 by the Norwegian newspaper “Dagens Næringsliv”. Although this case made noise in the Western media and “Statoil” was found guilty by the Norwegian courts, the Iranian side did not punish MHRafsanjani.
He was mostly accused of organizing actions in the presidential election in 2009, in which his father also participated.
It should be noted that Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani was the President of Iran from August 3, 1989 to August 2, 1997. He died in January 2017 at the age of 82.
