Kevin McCarthy was expected to take the post on January 5, but due to the position of several of his party members, he could not get enough votes. It is the first time in the last 100 years that it was not possible to elect the Speaker of the House of Representatives in the first ballot. A similar event happened last time in 1923. At that time, the speaker was elected in the ninth round of voting. Also, 164 years ago – in 1859, the speaker was determined in the 44th round.
