New York:(International Desk) According to Ug News Media Europe Report,The US’ latest move to suspend 26 China-bound flights from the US by four Chinese carriers and attempts to shift blame to China’s “circuit breaker” measures on prevention of coronavirus are extremely irresponsible and will harm normal flight operations between the two countries, Chinese officials and experts said on Friday.
The remarks followed the US government confirming on Thursday it will suspend 26 China-bound flights from the US by four Chinese carriers. The move will affect flights operated by Xiamen Airlines, Air China, China Southern Airlines and China Eastern Airlines from September 5 to September 28.The suspensions include 19 China-bound flights departing from Los Angeles and seven China Eastern flights from New York. The US Transportation Department claimed that its latest move was made after Chinese authorities recently canceled 26 American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines flights over China’s circuit breaker measures.
Liu Pengyu, a spokesman for the Chinese Embassy in the US said that the USDOT action was “extremely irresponsible” and “groundlessly suspended Chinese airline flights,” according to a Reuters report. The embassy said China’s COVID-19 “circuit breaker” measures were fair and transparent, applied both to Chinese and foreign airlines and were consistent with bilateral air transportation agreements. The blocking of flights marked the latest development over international flights and rules designed to prevent the spread of coronavirus between the two countries. In January, the Transportation Department suspended 44 China-bound flights from the US by the four Chinese carriers due to circuit breaker actions on American flights. It is irresponsible for the US to unilaterally and recklessly suspend Chinese flights and blame China’s circuit breaker rule for poor US epidemic control measures, Qi Qi, an industry observer, told the Global Times on Friday. Qi said that the 26 flights covered almost all Chinese flights operating between China and US and would have huge impact on the already-tight flight available between the two countries, increasing the inconvenience of people-to-people exchanges between China and the US.The four Chinese carriers are currently the only Chinese carriers flying between China and the US. While United Airlines, American Airlines and Delta Air Lines are the three US carriers between the two countries. In contrast to the unilateral move to create difficulties for international travelers, Chinese authorities revised flight circuit breaker mechanism on August 7 to facilitate the resumption of international flights. If the number of passengers on a flight to China testing positive for COVID-19 equates to four percent of total passengers on board, the flight will be suspended for one week. If at eight percent or above, the flight will be suspended for two weeks, according to the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC).The circuit breaker threshold was eased from five positive cases per flight to four percent while the suspension cycle has been cut by half compared with the original version updated in April 2021.According to the CAAC policy updated in April 2021, if the number of passengers testing positive for COVID-19 reaches five for a flight, the airline’s flights will be suspended for two weeks. The suspension will last for four weeks if the number of passengers testing positive reaches 10.
