He is a German politician of Pakistan descent who has also made important contributions to promote Iqbal’s thought and philosophy in Heidelberg.

According to International Global Times Media Europe, Wasim Butt, a native of Chowinda village on the outskirts of Sialkot, the city of Allama Iqbal, is a prominent figure in the politics of Heidelberg, Germany. He has been doing successful politics for the last eleven years.

Wasim Butt has twice won the general elections as independent candidate.

He is the only non-German Asian-origin candidate in German history to have won general elections for two consecutive terms. He had won his first elections in 2014 and the second success came in 2019 when he managed to win with more than 80,000 votes.

As a committed politician and true representative of the people, Wasim Butt is diligently working to resolve the issues faced by the public of his constituency.

The mayor of Heidelberg and other members of Heidelberg City Parliament have expressed full confidence in Wasim’s leadership. He is tasked with the important responsibilities such as meeting and interacting with foreign delegations.

Despite earning so much fame and respect in Germany, Wasim still remembers Pakistan and he is always looking for an opportunity to do something about his homeland.

Due to his efforts, an 8-member delegation of Pakistani students arrived in Germany in September 2019 for the professional training. Having Lahore declared the ‘UNESCO City of Literature’ in November 2019 is one of the feathers in Wasim’s cap. As a result, the international literature events will now be held in Lahore.

Pakistan has become one of the 27 countries in the world whose cities have been selected by UNESCO for the promotion of literature.

Wasim Butt was awarded a certificate of appreciation by Punjab Governor Chaudhry Ghulam Sarwar at a ceremony during his visit to Pakistan in March 2020 in recognition of his services.

The poet of the East Allama Muhammad Iqbal has a very intimate connection with Heidelberg and River Neckar. It was in this city that Iqbal had stayed for several months in 1907 and learned the German language. Iqbal used to spend evenings on the banks of the Neckar River.

Mesmerized by the calmness of Neckar and surrounding valley, Iqbal had written a poem called ‘An Evening’ which is now translated in German and inscribed on a stone near the banks of Neckar River.

There is also a passage in Heidelberg which is named after Iqbal. It is called Iqbal Ufer.

Wasim Butt is making considerable efforts to introduce Iqbal’s thoughts in addition to promoting Urdu literature in the City.
