Visit Disaster-prone Areas, Flood sites, Cautions Nigerians Against Abuja-Lokoja Highway.
Nigeria:(International Desk) According to ug news Media Europe,The Ambassador at Large and Head of Diplomatic Mission International Human Rights Commission Foundation (IHRC) Nigeria, Ambassador Dr. Duru Hezekiah, has reiterated participatory assessment to enhance national and global efforts in mitigating flooding effects in Nigeria.
Upon his appointment as Ambassador at Large and Head of Diplomatic Mission IHRC Nigeria in September 2022, and following recent developments of devastating news from flood, Dr. Duru has initiated holistic steps to help reduce the rate of mortality and morbidity associated with flood disaster and their violation of fundamental human rights.
Since the onset of the flood this year, many people in disaster-prone areas and flood sites across the Nigeria States have been left homeless as their houses submerged and in some cases washed away by the flood, this deplorable situation has left many people stranded, and affected vulnerable groups ever than before.
The participatory assessment is aimed at assisting the government in finding sustainable practices and systems, formulating policies that are adequate, accessible, financially sustainable, adaptable, and efficient; to provide support and strengthening the capacities of the State in mitigating flood effects in Nigeria.
Meanwhile, fact findings from the Special Monitoring Mission (SMM) led by Elijah Echendu Vitus on the 7th of October 2022 with key interviews by Hon. Faleke Sunday, Deputy Chief of Staff Kogi State Government, Mr. Jihad, Commander of the Vigilante Group in Adankolo IDP Camp at Saint Luke Primary School, HRH. Chief David Aibe Agbayi the Etsu of Adankolo, and Mrs. Aminu Folashade from the State Emergency Management Agency will, however, serve as key tools in improving the mechanisms.
The report also maintained that the SMM Officials were taken to the Kogi State Flood Situation Room, IDP Camp, affected communities, and the Ministry of Environment where relief materials and food items are carried for distribution across affected Local Government Areas in the State.
State Coordinators of the Special Monitoring Mission International Human Rights Commission (SMM IHRC) are by this note through the National Coordinator, to liaise with the Central Office for the guidance and support needed in this participatory exercise across Nigeria.
At the main time, Nigerians plying the Abuja-Lokoja highway to take a different route as the impact of the flooding has held up commuters for many hours, resulting in heavy traffic gridlock and leaving many passengers stranded.
