Spread the love

(Part 2)
August 1, 2024

In last week’s reflection, I explained the virtue of gratitude and examined the nature, the characteristics and the signs of a grateful mind. This week I will discuss gratitude as a positive mindset necessary for a flourishing life. There are many ways to be grateful, gratitude is your personal expression of your thankfulness. For some people, physical acts of gratitude like paying compliments increase happiness. Below are some suggestions for learning gratitude. Gratitude is more than just saying “thank you”; it’s a mindset that enhances happiness and well-being.

Understanding Thankfulness vs Gratitude
Thankfulness is a reaction to positive events. For instance, receiving a gift makes you feel thankful, so you say thank you. This feeling is temporary and fades over time. Gratitude, on the other hand, is a mindset. It involves appreciating life’s moments and maintaining a positive outlook regardless of circumstances. When you miss a bus or face challenges, gratitude helps you stay positive and smile through adversity. It’s about accepting life’s ups and downs with a positive attitude.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “How amazing is the situation of a believer! No matter what happens to them, it’s always good for them. This blessing is unique to believers. If something good happens, they thank Allah and it brings them more good. If something bad happens, they stay patient and it still brings them good” (Muslim).

Practicing Gratitude
Saying “thank you” is a simple yet powerful way to express gratitude. It’s about appreciating acts of kindness and recognising the good in our lives. This practice not only makes us happier but also strengthens our relationships.
Sharing good news and congratulating others spreads positivity. It’s an act of kindness that can significantly boost both your mood and that of others. For example, The Majestic Quran says, “Give good news to my servants who listen to the word and follow the best teachings and repent” (Al Zumar: 17).
Paying compliments is another effective way of expressing gratitude. Compliments are expressions of praise or admiration. They can significantly impact both the giver and the receiver by creating a sense of value and respect. Despite their power, we often underestimate their impact and don’t give them as frequently as we should. According to behavioural scientist Xuan Zhao ‘compliments are powerful, small actions that brighten your day and someone else’s.’
Five Compliments to Use Frequently
“You make even ordinary moments feel extraordinary.” This compliment highlights how someone’s presence makes life meaningful.
“Hey, that’s a great shirt!” Simple compliments like this can brighten someone’s day, especially when genuine.
“I love the way you bring out the best in people.” Recognising specific qualities and actions shows appreciation for someone’s efforts to help others grow.
“I am really impressed with your ability to work under pressure.” This is a thoughtful compliment that shows respect for someone’s competence and skills.
“You handled that situation so well.” Reassuring someone that they managed a challenging situation effectively can boost their confidence.
Six Exercises to Cultivate Gratitude
Imagine losing and regaining everyday comforts, visualize losing things you take for granted, like your job or health, and then imagine getting them back. This exercise helps you appreciate them more.
Enjoy small things and appreciate everyday moments instead of waiting for big achievements. This includes small pleasures like a meal, a smile from a friend, or a sunny day.
Appreciate life fully when faced with difficulties, and remember that every challenge carries a hidden benefit. Ask yourself, “What’s good about this?” or “What can I learn from this?”
Make a gratitude list and write down five things you are grateful for each day, either in the morning or before bed.
Write a thank you letter or write a letter to someone who has positively influenced your life but whom you haven’t thanked properly. Read it to them face-to-face if possible.
Avoid complaining, criticising, or gossiping for two weeks This exercise helps you focus on positive aspects of life and reduces negativity.
Conclusion
“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos into order, and confusion into clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.” – Melody Beattie

Start appreciating the small things, recognise the value of friends, and acknowledge every gift. Let gratitude be a constant mindset, where you notice the little things and look for the good even in unpleasant situations. Follow the example of Ibrahim, who is called ‘Shakir’ (grateful) by Allah and cultivate gratitude in your life.
