In the seven hundred-year history of Manchester City Council, Pakistani-origin Councillor Shaukat Ali has been elected as the fifth Pakistani-origin and 128th Lord Mayor of Manchester City Council.

Consul General of Pakistan Manchester Imtiaz Feroz Gondal, and Member of Parliament Afzal Khan attended his election meeting as special guests. Lord Mayor Councillor Shaukat Ali said that this moment is very memorable for him that he is making Pakistan famous in the UK – I will take all the communities of Manchester with me – my entry into politics as Lord Mayor of Manchester City is the result of the grace of Allah Almighty and the prayers of my parents. Consul General of Pakistan Manchester Imtiaz Feroz Gondal said that this year, councillors from Pakistan have been elected mayors in many councils in the UK and this is also an honor for Pakistan. MP Afzal Khan said that he was the first Muslim and Pakistani to be elected Lord Mayor of Manchester City Council. Today we have maintained this tradition. Councillors from the opposition Green Party, Workers Party, Shahbaz Sarwar – Liberal Democratic Party and Reform Party in Manchester City Council congratulated Councillor Shaukat Ali and assured him of their full support.
Newly elected Lord Mayor Councillor Shaukat Ali said that he will promote unity – solidarity – and welfare works among all communities residing in Manchester City during his one-year term as Lord Mayor.
