I wholeheartedly welcome the reopening of Torkham border. Renowned social worker talks to the media

Islamabad (Special Correspondent)renowned social worker Dr. Rabia Noor said that The reopening of the Torkham border is a much-needed relief for thousands of patients of Afghanistan who have endured weeks of uncertainty, waiting in pain, and helplessness. This closure was not just about restricted movement; for many, it is a matter of life and death.

Many Afghan families rely on Pakistan’s healthcare system for life-saving treatments that are unavailable or scarce in their own country. During the past weeks, we were seeing heartbreaking cases, mothers desperately waiting to get medical help for their children, elderly patients suffering without access to essential treatment, and families stranded here or cross border in grief and despair. These are not just numbers of people. These are human lives, each with a story of struggle and hope.

I sincerely appreciate the reopening of the border, as it restores a vital lifeline for those in desperate need of medical care. However, this situation highlights an urgent need for a more stable and humanitarian-driven system that ensures medical access that must remain uninterrupted, regardless of political circumstances.

I urge both Pakistan and Afghanistan to establish a sustainable mechanism for cross-border medical travel—one that prioritizes human lives over political differences. Patients should never be caught in the middle of diplomatic challenges. Healthcare is a fundamental right, and it must never be held hostage by border closures. Let this reopening be a step toward a long-term solution that guarantees dignity and care for all who need it.
