London Arif Chaudhry
He said that in my constituency (Stoke-on-Trent North), local councillors Majid Khan, Amjad Wazir, Javed Najmi and Matlab Butt brought to my attention the issue of Kashmir and the human rights violations in Kashmir. A large number of Kashmiris live in Stoke-on-Trent, for whom the issue of Kashmir is not a distant issue, but is connected to their families and emotions. I stand with all my constituents and community leaders who are raising their voices about this crisis.
The restrictions on civil liberties, unjustified arrests and denial of political rights in Kashmir are extremely worrying. We cannot be satisfied with just verbal sympathy, now is the time to take practical steps against these atrocities. The Kashmiri people must have the right to determine their own destiny. I urge my government (the Labour government) to use its influence to promote the process of self-determination in Jammu and Kashmir. This decades-long struggle can no longer be resolved through mere talks; it requires practical action. Britain has a deep and historic connection with the region. It is our moral responsibility to play an active role in promoting peace and stability and the restoration of the fundamental human rights of the Kashmiris, rather than being silent spectators. We can no longer rely on discussion alone to resolve this long-standing dispute. It is time for us to play a serious role in resolving this dispute and to take concrete and practical steps towards lasting peace in the region.
